Session 1

Introduction to AI in Justice and Corrections – Understanding the Basics

This webinar session breaks down what AI is, why it matters, and how it’s starting to show up in justice and corrections. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of key terms, explore potential benefits and concerns, and begin thinking about how AI might impact their own work.  Individuals who actively participate in this course and apply the course materials will be able to:

• Explain key concepts of artificial intelligence (AI), including machine learning and common misconceptions.
• Identify potential benefits and challenges of applying AI in justice and corrections.
• Describe the relevance of AI literacy for professionals across roles in justice and corrections.
• List current and emerging AI applications relevant to justice and corrections.

Session 2

AI in Justice and Corrections: Applications, Decision-Making, and Limitations

2 pm. to 4 pm. August 21, 2025     $85.00

This session explores how AI tools are being used in justice and corrections today—from risk assessments to resource planning—and how they make decisions based on data. Participants will also examine the limitations of these tools, including issues like bias and lack of transparency, and consider strategies for reducing risk. Individuals who actively participate in this course and apply the course materials will be able to:

• Describe how AI is currently used—and being explored—for use across justice and corrections.
• Explain how AI tools analyze data to generate predictions and support decisions.
• Identify common limitations of AI, including bias, opacity, and lack of context.
• Analyze the potential impacts of AI tools on staff, individuals in custody, and the public.
• List strategies for reducing risks and promoting fairness in AI implementation.

 

Session 3

Responsible Application of AI in Justice and Corrections: Ethics, Policy, and Implementation

This final session focuses on what it takes to use AI responsibly. Participants will learn about ethical principles, policy considerations, and best practices for implementation—while exploring how to build trust, ensure accountability, and take practical steps within their own roles or agencies.

 Individuals who actively participate in this course and apply the course materials will be able to:

• Explain the importance of transparency, accountability, and public trust in justice-related AI use.
• Describe core ethical principles that should guide AI adoption, including human oversight.
• Assess the policy implications of AI and identify ways professionals can contribute to responsible practices.
• List recommended practices for implementing and evaluating AI tools in justice settings.
• Develop preliminary ideas for applying responsible AI practices within their own work or agency.
